By focusing on craftsmanship and attention to detail, we make sure your canvases are framed to the highest standard, offering both elegance and lasting protection. Our expert team can also advise on display positioning and long-term care to ensure your framed canvas continues to impress for generations.
For canvas framing, we use a range of professional methods designed to protect the artwork while ensuring it is presented cleanly and securely within the frame. The approach taken will depend on the condition, size, and format of the canvas, as well as how it is intended to be displayed.
One of the most common techniques is stretching the canvas. This involves carefully fixing the canvas over stretcher bars to create a smooth, taut surface. We use stretcher bars in a variety of depths and dimensions, allowing us to match the structure of the support to the size and weight of the canvas. Proper stretching helps prevent sagging, rippling, or distortion over time, ensuring the artwork remains stable and visually balanced when displayed.
When a canvas is stretched, a small border around the edge of the artwork - typically around 2 inches or 5 centimetres - is required to wrap around the stretcher bars. This area is known as the bleed and is necessary to achieve the correct tension across the surface of the canvas. As a result, this portion of the canvas will not be visible once the work is stretched and framed. Where possible, we discuss this with you in advance so you are fully aware of how the finished piece will appear.
In addition to stretching, we often recommend the use of deeper mouldings when framing canvases. Deeper frames are particularly well-suited to canvas artwork, as they allow the stretched canvas to sit neatly within the frame rather than protruding beyond it. This creates a clean, finished appearance and helps protect the edges of the canvas from accidental damage.
Deeper mouldings also provide greater structural support, especially for larger or heavier canvases. By ensuring the canvas remains fully contained within the frame, the artwork is better protected during handling, transport, and long-term display. This approach also allows for a more cohesive visual presentation, whether the finished piece is intended for a contemporary or more traditional setting.
Throughout the canvas framing process, care is taken to ensure that the chosen methods and materials suit both the artwork and its intended environment. By combining correct stretching techniques with appropriately sized frames, we aim to create a finished piece that is stable, well-supported, and visually refined, allowing your canvas artwork to be displayed with confidence and clarity.
